Why should I learn this?

There have been a lot of changes to the way teachers teach Math over the last decade. A lot of studies have been conducted about the way we teach Math to students, how they learn, how to make deeper Mathematical connections and how Math relates to the world around them. In an effort to put an end to students asking their teacher "Why should I learn this? I'll never use it in real life" here is a place for ideas to plan effective Math lesson that engage your students to see Mathematics as something useful everyday.

Long Range Planning

Like Big Ideas, long range plans plan with the end in mind.  If gives a good snap shot of the year in Math; what concepts you are going to teach, when your going to teach them in the school year and how your good to make sure the Big Ideas are found throughout. Marion Small, in her 2009 book Making Math Meaningful to Canadian Student, K-8 points out that long range planning is about taking the time to get to know curriculum.  It provides a nice visual of the year ahead.
